One of God’s greatest gifts is the universal character of the Church, blessing and calling us to live in solidarity with our sisters and brothers in faith. Our faith calls us to a different road - a path of global responsibility and solidarity. The call to solidarity is at the heart of St. John Paul II’s leadership. He calls us to the defense of all human life and cares for God’s creation.
International parish twinning provides an opportunity for a Roman Catholic parish to develop a relationship with a “Sister Parish” in a foreign country. The relationship is two-way as both parishes grow through the sharing of experiences and faith.
A Parish in India: - St. Joachim parish has a sister parish, St. John Bosco parish ( Bosco Puram), in the diocese of Vellore, in the state of Tamil Nadu, South India. It is a rural and remote parish consists of 10 mission stations. A sister parish committee was formed in July 2018 and approved by the Bishop of La Crosse. Based on input from the Bishop in the diocese of Vellore, our team initially decided to focus on improving English language literacy of about 25, 1st through 6th-grade students attending parochial school as a scholarship program. The goal of this endeavor is to raise $4000 by April 30, 2019. The transactions will be dealt with by the mission office of the Diocese.
Purpose: -
- To create a spiritual bond between two parishes. Both parishes are encouraged to pray for one another, correspond regularly about happenings in each parish by information, photographs, letters of encouragement and visits by parish personnel/parishioners when possible.
- To respect and trust between the parishes by empowering both communities to use their discretion and initiative in determining what spiritual and material gifts they would like to bestow on each other.
- To create a missionary zeal among young Catholics to sustain in their faith and to share. Situating our young Catholics in a missionary environment would help them to become the prophets of their time to lead the Church in the modern world.
Current Activities: - Fundraising activities will include (but are not limited to) proceeds from the annual parish rummage sale, a parish trivia night to be held sometime during winter, a scrapbooking day and also other fund-raising activities with parishioners and youth. The committee is also looking into a possible raffle. Personal donations from the parishioners are also welcomed.
Future Plan: - Committee members will also be working with youth of our parish to have them be involved in a cross-cultural experience with the youth from the Diocese of Vellore.
Committee Members: - Bill Rosandick – Chairperson, Cindy Schooley – Secretary, Sue Baker, Tom Minor, Marci Ortner, Jolene Schiller, Janet Stellmach, Mike Stellmach and Hillary Tolzmann.
