The Holy Name Society promotes reverence for the Sacred Names of Jesus Christ. Obedience, loyalty to the teachings of the Catholic Church, and the personal sanctification and holiness of its members are the main essence of the society. Members are called to contribute to the evangelization mission of the Church and to make perpetual acts of reverence and love for our Lord.
The Holy Name Society is to assist in parish ministries by performing the Corporal Works of Mercy (feed the hungry, to clothe the naked, give drink to the thirsty, shelter to the homeless, tend the sick, visit those in prison, and bury the dead ) and the Spiritual Works of Mercy: ( convert sinners, instruct the ignorant, counsel the wayward, comfort the sorrowing, bear adversity patiently, forgive offenses, and pray for the living and the dead).
Society at St. Joachim
The Holy Name Society of St. Joachim Church was established in 1924. The Society is dedicated to the Holy Name of Jesus. We are proponents of Christian education, both in the parish itself and outside the parish as opportunities present themselves. This has been the goal of the Holy Name men since the beginning.
When St. Joachim operated the parochial school also named St. Joachim, the Holy Name Society provided money to help with funding for educational equipment such as over-head projectors, furniture, and playground equipment and these are just a few of the things that come to mind as I write this. After the closing of the school, our attention turned to the construction of the new church. All men of the parish are considered as members. It has been many years since we have collected dues. Our meetings are the second Monday of the month.
Basic Activities
We provide Bibles to our Confirmation students on the years that the Bishop comes to our area. Some of the charities we donate to are the Hannah House, Crossroads Church (thanksgiving dinner), St. John Bosco day, the Daughters of the Pieta, Pittsville Area Neighbors Shelf and the transitional shelter. We also sponsor the Parish Christmas party.
The Holy Name Society has two fund raising events. They are the Harvest Festival each August, and the Ducks Unlimited banquet in February of each year. These two events provide us with the funds to operate our yearly projects.
