The primary role of the altar server is to assist the priest in the celebration of the liturgy during Mass. Servers actively participate in the liturgy by carrying the cross, the processional candle(s), holding the Roman Missal for the priest celebrant when he is not at the altar, carrying the incense and censer, presenting the bread, wine, and water to the priest during the preparation of the gifts or assist him when he receives the gifts from the people, wash the hands of the priest, assist the priest celebrant and deacon as necessary. Altar servers:
❖ Maybe male or female.
❖ Should be of sufficient age and maturity to perform the duties of a server with the appropriate reverence.
❖ Should have already received the Sacrament of First Holy Communion and should receive the Eucharist whenever they participate at Mass.
❖ Should have received proper guidance, preparation, and instruction regarding the Mass, instruments used in the Liturgy, and the various liturgical celebrations.
❖ Observe proper decorum and attire when serving Mass.
❖ All fourth-grade students after their first communion at St. Joachim's receive instruction twice a year to become altar servers by Christina Pelot, our youth coordinator.
